Vinland is a meditation on the complex and continually shifting relationships between spaces, social and economic structures, and personal and collective histories. Drawn from trips to Newfoundland and accounts of my family’s links to the area, this ongoing project reflects my interest in memory, landscape, the production of space, and the construction of social exchanges.
I am using contemporary interviews, archival materials and photographs and video shot in Newfoundland to reflect on my family’s history, the French Shore, and, in a larger sense, conditions of migration and place.
RecentlyVInland has evolved to incorporate Quilt (Gladys Osmond, Beaches, Newfoundland, 2013) based on quilt purchased in Beaches during my 2013 trip. Coincidently, Gladys can be seen peering out the window in Structure 19/26.
