The “map” and “panel” oil paintings are a reconsideration of the 123 part Quilt (Gladys Osmond, The Beaches, Newfoundland, 2013) and a related series of “Adjacent Panel” watercolors produced in 2016-2017. In those works, I “reverse engineered” a crazy quilt purchased from a distant relative in Newfoundland. The resulting paintings are an homage to the quilt’s maker and a collapsing of painting genres.
I’ve also come to realize that these works are heavily influenced by my advocacy on fair redistricting maps in the City of 29 Palms in 2021-2022 including the design and submission of redistricting maps for consideration:
City’s idea of districts looks suspicious, Hi-Desert Star and Desert Trail, August 4, 2021
City is ignoring resident’s rights, Hi-Desert Star and Desert Trail, September 21, 2021
Unite neighborhoods, spread out Council, Hi-Desert Star and Desert Trail, March 2, 2022
Other works from the Vinland series:
Structures circa 2013-2014.
Vinland paintings circa 2016-2017
Works from this series were exhibited in 2021 at Lazy Eye Gallery.
